In a move poised to boost innovation and skill development in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, a delegation from Laser Engineering and Resources Consultants, Wednesday paid a courtesy visit to the Management of the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), signaling the formation of a landmark strategic partnership.
The high-level meeting, held at PTI’s expansive campus in Effurun, brought together key executives from Laser Engineering led by the Managing Director, Prof. Mike Onyekonwu and PTI’s leadership, led by Principal and Chief Executive Engr. Dr. Samule Onoji, who was represented by the Director of Research and Development, Dr. (Mrs.) Tina Isichei.
The proposed partnership between PTI and Laser Engineering will be focused on hands-on learning aimed at bridging the gaps between theory and industry applicability, while the initial efforts will concentrate on drilling and process production to create a measurable impact.
Speaking on behalf of the Institute’s Chief Executive, Dr. Tina Isichei emphasized the Institute’s longstanding global influence and deep institutional legacy in the oil and gas sector, global presence and alumni network extend beyond Nigeria, with PTI products and trained professionals visible worldwide.
Dr. Isichei stated that PTI has operated for over five decades, strengthening its global footprint adding that PTI trainees have ascended to executive roles nationally and internationally, demonstrating the Institute’s impact. “Regular visits to oil and gas establishments confirm that PTI alumni are consistently present, showcasing broad industry integration”, she said.
According to Dr. Isichei, “This legacy builds a strong brand credibility that supports partnerships and collaboration opportunities. Training as the core mission with diverse programs including student education (National Diploma and Higher National Diploma) and professional development,”.
She informed the visitors that the Institute’s training programs are sometimes delivered in partnership with other companies to incorporate best international practices. The Institute she said balances foundational education with advanced, modernized content to meet current industry needs. This approach according to her ensures PTI remains competitive and relevant in evolving global markets. “The commitment to training underpins PTI’s role as a knowledge hub and talent pipeline for the sector”, she added.
Earlier, the Laser Engineering Managing Director, Prof. Mike Onyekonwu said the desire of his company to partner with PTI is to leverage on the Institute’s vast expertise in mitigating the gaps between university education and the oil and gas industry.
Prof. Onyekonwu disclosed that Laser Engineering is seeking to expand its curriculum with intensive drilling and production engineering courses, aiming to collaborate with partners possessing advanced rigs and flow stations and he would be glad to go into partnership with PTI as it possesses all Laser Engineering is seeking for.
According to him, “Laser Engineering came to see the facilities in PTI and to see how we can leverage on the vast expertise of the Institute to enable us service the industry and to make returns as well. To be candid, the facilities we have seen so far is beyond our imagination, PTI is a goldmine in terms of facilities and expertise”.
“This partnership represents a synergy of expertise,” Prof. Onyekonwu stated during the visit. “Laser Engineering’s cutting-edge laser engineering solutions, combined with PTI’s renowned training infrastructure, will empower the next generation of Nigerian engineers and technicians”.
The meeting which highlighted the critical gaps between university education and industry needs in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector is expected to bridge these gaps through practical training and workforce development by both parties after signing the planned Memorandum of Understating (MoU).
Prof. Onyekonwu disclosed that Laser Engineering has 35-year legacy in practical training, just like PTI, the company provides practical services like reservoir management, PVT analysis, environmental analysis, slick line services, and training among others.
He pointed out that the industry faces limited technical training capacity and weak links between academia and industry. Graduates often lack workplace readiness due to inadequate practical skills and digital proficiency. There is a high impact from these gaps, causing delays in graduate employment after university. Laser Engineering’s mission is to develop local content by equipping young graduates with necessary skills to fill this void.
Trainees are exposed to cutting-edge equipment and software, enhancing their technical readiness. Short and intensive courses complement longer programs, targeting specific in-demand skill sets, he disclosed.
Also speaking during the Visit, the PTI’s Director of Engineering, Engr. Dr. Ahmed Adamu pointed out PTI since inception has delivered on her vision and mission statements which centers on training and retraining.
Dr. Adamu who made a presentation on behalf of the Institute assured the visitors of the PTI’s outstanding position in the oil and gas sector which will give Laser Engineering a big boost for their quest.
Also on her part, the PTI’s Head of Linkages, Exchange and Partnerships, Dr. (Mrs.) Sarah Nwinee who facilitated the visit noted that the goodwill from both parties is expected to foster trust and open communication moving forward.
According to her, the overall atmosphere suggests readiness to advance to detailed planning phases, formalize the collaboration process and partnership framework to solidify ongoing cooperation.
She added that both PTI and Laser Engineering will leverage the entrepreneurial mindset within the team to identify new opportunities and practical areas for innovation in the collaboration.
The climax of the visit was a facility tour of the Institute’s legacy Rig and Flow station as well as PVT laboratory.
