In a horrifying attack that plunged an entire community into fear and confusion, heavily armed terrorists stormed a girls’ secondary school in Kebbi State late last night, abducting numerous students and killing the school’s Deputy Headmaster.
According to eyewitnesses and local security sources, the attackers arrived at the school premises around midnight, firing sporadically into the air to instill panic. They forcibly broke through the school’s gates before invading the students’ hostels, where most of the girls were asleep.
Several students were whisked away after security personnel on duty were overpowered. Many others managed to escape in the chaos, fleeing into nearby villages for safety. As of press time, authorities were still working to determine the exact number of students taken.
Tragically, Malam Hassan Yakubu Makuki, the Deputy Headmaster, was shot and killed while attempting to shield students from the gunmen. Community members described him as a dedicated educator who had served the institution with outstanding commitment for years.
Security forces were swiftly deployed to the area shortly after the attack. A joint operation involving the police, the military, and local vigilante groups has begun, aimed at tracking down the assailants and rescuing the abducted students.
In an official statement issued this morning, the Kebbi State Government condemned the attack in strong terms, assuring citizens that all necessary emergency measures were being implemented to restore normalcy. The government also reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding schools and ensuring the safe return of the abducted students.
The incident has reignited widespread concern over the rising insecurity in parts of northern Nigeria, where schools have increasingly become targets of armed groups. Community leaders and parents are calling for urgent, coordinated action to protect educational institutions and prevent further tragedies.
Meanwhile, counseling and emergency support services have been set up for traumatized students and staff, as the school and surrounding communities grapple with the devastating aftermath of the assault.
