Political realignments have deepened in Kano State as more commissioners and top government officials resigned following Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Governor Yusuf announced his move to the APC on Monday, describing it as being in the “best interest of the people of Kano State,” after formally quitting the NNPP last Friday over internal crises and leadership disputes. The defection followed the earlier exit of 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly from the NNPP to the APC.
Among the latest resignations is Ibrahim Umaru, commissioner for internal security and special services, who tendered his resignation in a letter to the governor. Nasiru Garo, commissioner for special duties, also stepped down, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve.
Other officials who have resigned include Laminu Rabiu, director-general of the Kano State Pilgrims Welfare Board, Hassan Danbappa, managing director of the Kano State Roads Maintenance Agency (KARMA), and Shafa’atu Ahmed, chief governor’s report officer at the ministry of rural and urban development.
Several of the departing officials cited political realignment and loyalty to the NNPP leadership, particularly the Kwankwasiyya movement, as reasons for their decisions, marking a significant shake-up in Kano’s political landscape following the governor’s defection.
