The ongoing crisis in the Kano State chapter of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has taken a new dimension as Senator Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila (representing Kano South) has reaffirmed that his political future lies in the hands of his constituents, not party dynamics.
Sumaila underscored that his performance and service delivery during his tenure would determine his prospects for 2027. He dismissed the relevance of his relationship with the NNPP State Chairman, Hashim Suleiman Dungurawa, stating, “What my people will assess is my performance over four years—what I have delivered for them; their share in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and their position. They will not ask about my relationship with the party chairman.”
The senator, who is embroiled in a legal dispute with Dungurawa, refuted allegations of anti-party activities. While acknowledging differences with the NNPP national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, he clarified, “It’s not that we’ve parted ways, but we have reservations about certain developments. This is normal in politics. I remain a committed member of the NNPP, and my issues with the chairman will be resolved in court.”
The conflict intensified following Sumaila’s advice to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to prioritise the welfare of Kano’s residents over personal loyalty to Kwankwaso. This led to allegations from Dungurawa, accusing Sumaila of fraud and actions detrimental to the party’s interests.
Despite these challenges, Sumaila expressed confidence in his constituents’ ability to evaluate his leadership objectively, emphasizing, “They will differentiate between good and bad.”
This development highlights deepening divisions within the NNPP in Kano State, with potential implications for the party’s cohesion and future electoral performance.
