CSO Urges INEC to Publish Maps of Restored Constituencies After Court Victory
…Idris Miliki says judgment on suppressed constituencies is milestone for fairness, representation
Lokoja – Conscience for Human Rights and Conflict Resolution, CHRICED, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to urgently release maps of newly restored constituencies following a recent court judgment mandating INEC to reinstate all suppressed constituencies across affected states.
The Executive Director of CHRICED, Idris Miliki Abdul, said the court pronouncement was in the interest of justice, fairness and adequate representation. He commended the judiciary for what he called an “all important milestone judicial pronouncement.”
Miliki also credited Hon. Salman Idris, member representing Kabba/Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency, for moving the motion on the floor of the National Assembly that brought the issue to national attention.
He further acknowledged the role of the state governor, other stakeholders who drove the litigation, and the media for keeping the issue alive.
“Based on the recent court judgement that mandated INEC to restore all the suppressed constituencies, INEC should come up with the map of the newly restored suppressed constituency in various locations across the affected states,” Miliki stated.
He called on political parties to play their part by ensuring peaceful primaries in the affected areas. “As a matter of urgency, we urge INEC to come up with the maps of the areas to serve as a guide to various stakeholders,” he added.
The court ruling is expected to affect several constituencies that were delisted or merged in past delimitation exercises, leaving communities without direct representation.
