By Ahiaba Douglas
As the National Council of Women Societies (NCWS), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja Chapter, held its Convention and Elections themed “Accelerated Action: Empowering Women,” on Thursday, December 18, at the Cyprian Ekwensi Centre for Arts and Culture, Area 10, Garki, Abuja, women leaders, politicians, and other stakeholders aligned with the mission and vision of the Council extended goodwill messages to the organization.
Speaking exclusively to the press shortly after the newly elected executives were sworn in, Hon. Loveth Izekor, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Councillorship Candidate for City Centre Ward of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), commended the peaceful atmosphere that characterized the entire process.
She noted that the election clearly demonstrated the unwavering commitment of the National Council of Women Societies (NCWS) in Nigeria to the welfare and advancement of women across the country.
Hon. Izekor expressed confidence in the capacity of the newly elected executives to sustain and build upon the achievements recorded by the outgoing leadership, pointing out that most of them had previously served under the former executive council of the chapter.
Responding to questions from journalists on the perceived inability of Nigerian women to effectively leverage their numerical strength to influence electoral outcomes, she stated that Nigerian women are now more focused and politically conscious under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. She highlighted ongoing campaigns and advocacy for the Reserved Seats Bill for women in the National Assembly as evidence of their renewed determination.
According to her, Nigerian women have increasingly recognized their worth and capacity, expressing optimism that the political landscape would witness a significant shift in favor of women by the 2027 general elections.
She congratulated the newly elected President of the NCWS FCT Chapter, Hajiya Aishat Awada Ringo, alongside other executives, urging them to work collectively toward achieving the overarching objectives of the National Council of Women Societies in the nation’s capital.
