Kabba/Bunu Local Government Legislative Council Leader Impeachment Rumour: A Joke Taken Too Far and a Threat to Freedom of Association
We have watched with deep concern and considerable disappointment the disturbing rumours making the rounds about an alleged plan to impeach the Kabba/Bunu Local Government Legislative Council Leader, Rt. Hon. Comfort Obaromi, simply because she attended the Town Hall Meeting convened by the Distinguished Senator Sunday Karimi, an APC stalwart, performing Senator and the party’s candidate for the 2027 Kogi West Senatorial election.
If this rumour is true, it is not only unfortunate and appalling; it represents a dangerous precedent that must not be allowed to take root in our political environment. It is a joke taken too far, an affront to democratic values and, most importantly, a troubling threat to the fundamental freedom of association.
Rt. Hon. Comfort Obaromi is a hardworking, dedicated, visionary and dutiful Council Leader who has continued to discharge her responsibilities with commitment and a strong sense of service to the people of Kabba/Bunu. Her attendance at a political gathering should not, under any circumstances, become a basis for punitive action against her, especially when similar meetings in Yagba Federal Constituency also had in attendance the APC Zonal Chairman, the 3 APC LGA Chairmen, Executive Chairmen of the LGAs, as well as party executives and stakeholders from both local and at ward levels.
Politics is about engagement, dialogue, persuasion and the freedom to interact with fellow citizens and political stakeholders. Democracy cannot thrive where elected or appointed public officials are expected to live in fear of attending legitimate political engagements. Freedom of association is not a privilege to be granted or withdrawn at the pleasure of anyone; it is a fundamental democratic value that must be respected.
If the alleged impeachment plan is indeed connected to Rt. Hon. Comfort Obaromi’s attendance at Senator Sunday Karimi’s Town Hall Meeting, then we strongly condemn such a move in its entirety. It is not only unjustifiable but capable of inflicting serious damage on the already fragile unity within the party.
At a time when the political family in Kogi State needs genuine reconciliation, tolerance, accommodation and unity, actions capable of reopening old wounds and creating new divisions should be avoided. The Governor Usman Ododo administration has a responsibility to promote inclusiveness, fairness and gender balance, particularly at a time when there is a growing demand for greater recognition and participation of women in governance.
Any attempt to punish a woman in public office merely for exercising her freedom to associate and participate in political engagements would send the wrong signal about our commitment to gender inclusion, fairness and political tolerance. It would also undermine the laudable efforts toward building a more united and inclusive political family in Kogi State.
We therefore appeal, in the strongest but most respectful terms, to the critical stakeholders, party leaders, elders and all persons of goodwill to intervene immediately and call whoever may be behind this disgraceful political adventure to order.
This is not the time to settle political scores. This is the time to build bridges.
The APC in Kogi State cannot afford another needless crisis arising from intolerance, suspicion or perceived political differences. The party must remain a broad family where members can disagree without becoming enemies, engage across political lines without fear and contribute to the growth of the party without intimidation.
We particularly appeal to the leadership of the party to protect the dignity of Hon. Comfort Obaromi and ensure that no action is taken against her on the basis of her legitimate participation in a political gathering.
Let us remember that political power is transient, but the consequences of injustice can endure for generations. No individual or group should allow political differences to destroy the bonds of friendship, family and community that have held Kabba/Bunu together for generations.
We call for calm, restraint, tolerance and genuine reconciliation. Let us put an end to this rumour, if indeed it is only a rumour, before it grows into a crisis capable of tearing apart the fragile unity we are all working so hard to preserve.
Kabba/Bunu deserves peace. Kogi APC deserves unity. Our women deserve respect. Democracy deserves freedom.
We must not allow a joke taken too far to become a political crisis that nobody can control.
Signed:
Hon. Tunde Akanmidu
Senior Legislative Aide to the Deputy President of the Senate
