Kukyu’u District Shines: Afizere Culture Takes Center Stage
The people of Kukyu’u (Maigemu) District showcased their rich culture to the world. The sounds of drums and various music filled the air, echoing through the beautiful mountains of Zangam, Maigemu, Angware, and neighboring communities in Jos East Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The serene atmosphere was electrified by the energetic dancing steps of the community.
The district is one of the famous districts of the Afizere people, where the headquarters of Jos East Local Government Area is situated.
The annual Kukyu’u Day celebration was a maiden edition, organized by the youth arm of the Afizere Nation, Afizere Youth Movement (AYM), Kuku’u Branch, led by Comrade Amos Yakubu Sambo.
The occasion aimed to promote culture and diverse activities, enhancing peaceful coexistence among the people.
According to the chairman, their culture was gradually eroding, and the idea was to organize an event to resuscitate and revive it, bringing youths together from various hamlets and villages of Maigemu District.
The Afizere people are known for their culture of circumcision, known as “Izhaak” in their dialect.
This ritual is carefully done, with a unique time set aside by the elders to initiate the process, whereby male children undergo the rituals. There’s also local wrestling, known as “Iza’an,” where youths actively engage themselves.
The chairman commended dignitaries for attending and celebrated with them.
He specially commended Governor Caleb Mutfwang for his transformative leadership and appealed to political leaders to step up for more development in Jos East, especially the local government headquarters.
The chairman of the occasion, Hon. Izang Yakubu Dembo, coordinator, North Central for Team Tinubu 2027, represented by former Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Joshua Izang Madaki, rejoiced with the youths of Kuku’u for their efforts in revitalizing their culture and traditions. He reiterated his commitment to support them.
The occasion was attended by notable dignitaries, including the Executive Chairman of Jos East Local Government Council, Hon. Markus Nyam Husseini, and other prominent figures. Highlights included traditional music displays by Asharwa, Amata, Izhaak, and Agba .
