Niger State Showcases Transformational Green Agenda and Climate Leadership at COP29 in Baku.
Over the weekend, on the sideline of #COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, the Secretary to the State Government, led the Niger State Delegation to pitch, The Niger State Transformational Agenda of His Excellency Mohammed Umaru Bago in the context of Green Economy Initiatives to the global climate communities.
At the event, public and private sector leaders were brought together to drive conversation around progress and challenges around climate action, sustainability targets, and the energy transition efforts in Niger State.
The Niger Day which took place at the Nigeria Pavilion in Baku Olympic Stadium, provided a platform for the State to showcase its green potentials and outlined some of the progress since the last #COP28 in Dubai – such as the establishment of *Niger State Agency for Green Initiatives*, the engagement of reputable national and International consulting firms (FutureCamp Germany) to enhance the state’s technical and managerial capacity to implement its Green Economic Blueprint.
Niger State, as the leading sub-national on Green Economy in Nigeria has embarked on an ambitious economic programs which are clearly encapsulated in the blueprint inter-woven around five interconnected pillars: Environmental conservation and management of carbon sink assets, Sustainable resource management, Renewable energy for development, Inclusivity, and Private sector-led job creation, especially green ones.
To help institutionalize these giant reforms, Governor Umaru Bago few months ago created an Inter-ministerial Agency and appointed a Director General to manage and coordinate Green Economy activities as a demonstration of Niger State’s resolve to safeguard the environment, enhance climate resilience, and foster sustainable resource management to diversify its economy, promote clean energy transition, ensure food security, and create green jobs that empower her citizens.
The Niger State Government during the #COP29 in Baku has already commenced collaborative engagements with the Climate Action Center of Excellence (CACE), established by the Gulf Organization for Research & Development to advance the critical climate goals outlined in Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, and the Federation of German Industries (BDI) – to generate demands for climate financing and technologies.
During the last days of #COP29 in Baku, Niger State Government will avail itself of the opportunities to network with potential NGOs and investors on carbon markets and showcase her ambitious plan towards greening the State, as well as contribute towards meeting the targets for Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)and Net zero emission.
