The Rise of Crime as Business Among Youths: A Call for Reflection and Reform
By Akin Fanodun – Kabba
It is with deep concern and a sense of responsibility that I write this reflection on the growing wave of criminal activities, particularly stealing and kidnapping, that have taken root in our local communities, specifically in the Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area.
Traditionally, Okunland has been known for its culture of hard work, respect, and moral discipline.
Unfortunately, in recent years, these values have been overshadowed by a desire for quick wealth. Many youths today reject honest work that requires patience and effort, instead seeking shortcuts through criminal means to impress others.
Social media has exacerbated the issue, creating unrealistic standards of wealth and success. Young men feel pressured to dress lavishly, spend extravagantly, and maintain appearances.
This pursuit of a false image has come at a great cost to our community, with theft, armed robbery, and kidnapping becoming alarmingly frequent.
Some youths have made crime a full-time occupation, collaborating with gangs and using fear to control their surroundings. This is driven by greed, envy, and a lack of self-control. Meanwhile, those who pursue honest hard work are often ridiculed or labeled as unambitious.
In the midst of this crisis, we must commend the efforts of Hon. (Barr.) Dare Michael, Chairman of Kabba/Bunu Local Government, for his proactive stance against crime and youth restiveness.
He has invested in initiatives that promote youth empowerment, vocational training, and social intervention programs.
The fight against crime requires a collective effort. Parents must instill the right values in their children, while community leaders, religious institutions, and youth organizations must sensitize young people on the importance of self-respect, delayed gratification, and ethical living.
To the youth, I say that crime is not the solution. Honest labor brings honor, and we must revive the spirit of hard work, integrity, and brotherhood that once made Kabba/Bunu and all of Okunland proud. Let us collectively say NO to crime and YES to a better future built on truth, effort, and unity.
